🐟 Moroccan Seafood Bastilla (Fish Pastilla)
Description:
Moroccan Seafood Bastilla is a savory pie made with fish, shrimp, and vermicelli noodles mixed with herbs and spices, wrapped in crispy pastry sheets, and baked until golden. It’s popular for celebrations and special meals.
Ingredients
Seafood Filling

400 g white fish fillets (hake or cod), cooked and flaked

200 g shrimp, peeled and chopped

150 g calamari (optional), sliced

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced
-
3 tbsp olive oil
-
1 red bell pepper, finely diced
-
1 carrot, grated
-
½ cup chopped parsley and cilantro
-
1 tsp salt
-
1 tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp paprika
-
½ tsp turmeric
-
½ tsp cumin
-
1 tsp harissa or chili paste (optional)
-
Juice of ½ lemon
Noodles
-
100 g Chinese vermicelli (rice noodles)
-
Hot water for soaking
Sauce
-
2 tbsp soy sauce
-
2 tbsp cream cheese or cooking cream (optional but common in modern versions)
Assembly

8–10 sheets warqa pastry or phyllo dough
-
80 g melted butter or oil for brushing
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare Noodles
-
Soak vermicelli in hot water for 5 minutes.

Drain and cut into shorter pieces.
2️⃣ Cook the Filling
-
Heat olive oil in a pan.
-
Sauté onion and garlic until soft.
-
Add shrimp and calamari; cook 3–4 minutes.

Add bell pepper and carrot; cook briefly.

Add flaked fish, spices, herbs, lemon juice, and soy sauce.

Stir in softened vermicelli and cream cheese/cream.

Cook 2–3 minutes, then cool.
3️⃣ Assemble the Bastilla

Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.

Brush a round pan with butter.

Layer pastry sheets, brushing each with butter and letting edges hang out.

Spread seafood filling evenly.

Fold edges over filling and cover with more pastry sheets.

Brush top with butter.
4️⃣ Bake

Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden and crispy.
5️⃣ Serve

Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.

Serve with lemon wedges
